Episode 38 Demi sat in the quiet office, waiting patiently. She couldn't help her shaking hands, no it wasn't from the withdrawal, which seemed to be fading, she was happy to say she was indeed getting better, but her hands kept shaking from the intensity of being so nervous. She sat in a therapists office. She was getting official help. She had a long talk/argument with Joe about it. She looked down to her revealed stitched up wrist and gently stroke the stitches. She still was trying to grasp in what she'd almost done. How could she have been so selfish? What was she thinking? She should never have done that! She almost left Ali behind! She almost left Joe--the love of her life--behind! She shook her head. She didn't know why Joe was doing this to her. He said it was to help her but she felt like he was just tired of her and her problems. Does he-- "Hello, Demi." Demi turned and forced a smile. She noticed the kindness in the woman's voice. She extended an arm and Demi hesitantly shook it. "I'm Dr. Jolie. You may call me Angelina if you'd like or Dr. J." She smiled again. "Whatever works best for you." Demi nodded and Dr. Jolie continued, "So, Demi, I hear you were discharged from the hospital about a week and a half ago?" She looked at Demi as Demi nodded. Dr. Jolie's eyes landed on Demi's stitches, she didn't stare though. "I also heard that you have some drinking troubles and you've been trying to stop. Why do you want to stop?" Demi swallowed hard. "That's the ...A presentation on drinking and depression in college, from the 2005 Depression on College Campuses Conference. Speaker: Elissa Weitzman, Sc.D., M.Sc., Research Scientist, Harvard University School of Public HealthAlcohol kills more teens than all illegal drugs combined. This video uses social media to show teens the negative impact underage drinking can have on their health and lives. Resources featured from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. It is said that even if you combine the number of coffee, soda, and shakes that are sold annually all over the world, it still wouldn't reach the amount of tea beverages that are consumed at the same period of time. With only water surpassing the volume of teas being consumed each year planet wide, tea and its long history of being grown, cultivated, and sold has definitely made an indelible mark in our society. Its current place in our culture is only even further strengthened by the fact that modern medical science and technology has bolstered health claims that our ancestors has discovered about drinking tea. These benefits of tea are becoming more and more common knowledge and it's not difficult to see why its popularity continues to surge upward.
Modest Mouse - Gravity Rides Everything - Stanford University, Live, Sat. 5-19-12, 1st row, Frost Amphitheater. Isaac Brock strolls a bit too far and pulls out the cord to his guitar, but catches it in time. :P Other Tidbits: The Stanford student concert organizers sought to revive the Frost Amphitheater as a venue for future events after reading about the Frost and its rich musical history from the 60s and 70s. Since then, the venue has not hosted a concert of this size (~5400) for over 10 years. A vote was put to the students on which band they would like to see, and Modest Mouse was the winner. The Frost Amphitheater itself is just a concrete slab, so everything has to be brought in, from the light towers to the dressing rooms (the white tents in the background). I also believe the Stanford Concert Network made their own festival decorations for the show. The Modest Mouse balloon with the Lucky Charms appeared to be made by the student body along with the large 3-D blue paper jellyfish hanging from the trees and the Nintendo mushrooms in the woods. This likely relates to the fact that the SCN had to lead a fundraising effort to support this ~$250000 event. These high operating costs have previously precluded the SCN from booking bands like MM to the Frost. The Stanford Concert Network did a really good job with the show. In addition to putting out a great poster, they even had a couple trendy SF food trucks there. And of course, everything had low student-pricing ...

China's netizens are demanding increased access to more detailed water quality information, after a news report included worrying figures on the quality of urban tap water in China. The original report, published by the magazine Century Weekly earlier this month, revealed that nationwide inspections conducted in 2009 showed only around 50 percent of China's tap water meet national standards, and sparked intense discussion among China's netizens concerned about the quality of urban drinking water. The original story was reposted on microblogs nearly 1 million times within one day of its release. But last week, figures released by the Urban Water Quality Monitoring Center, under the administration of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MHURD), showed that up to 83 percent of China's urban drinking water is safe to drink. The Director of the Center, Shao Yisheng, said that the figure was from a recent round of quality inspections conducted in 2011, under a set of new standards for the quality of drinking water. The new standards were revised and issued by the Ministry of Health in 2006, and are set to come into effect across China from the beginning of July this year. Shao also said that the water quality inspections carried out between 2008 and 2009 by MHURD revealed that only 58.2 percent of tested water qualified under the new standards. Many have urged related departments to release more details on water quality, such as which cities have water that does ...In Bunia town, Ituri district, in Congo's Orientale Province, Oxfam's health and emergency response teams have been tackling a serious cholera outbreak. Since the outbreak first emerged in December, there have been more than 2000 cases reported and 56 cholera deaths confirmed in the district. It is estimated that 51 milllion people in Congo -- about three quarters of the population -- have no access to safe drinking water. In Bunia, Oxfam has been working with a local water provider, Ngongo, to try improve water supply to sections of the town. The agency has also been carrying out hygiene promotion activities in public places -- including a local prison.www.channel4.com UNICEF estimates that there may be as many as 100000 street children in Ukraine. Marcel Theroux and Suemay Oram go underground in Kiev to meet some and find out what their life is like. Ukraine has invested billions in infrastructure projects for the 2012 European football championships. While the fans will enjoy the facilities, most of them won't know that living around them - and beneath their feet under the country's cities - are thousands of young people left on their own to survive dangerous, subterranean lives. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, years of economic hardship have hurt Ukraine. The result has been a lost generation of teenagers who have run away from broken families, alcoholism and abuse. They suffer awful living conditions and embarrass the Ukrainian government, which in June will host the European Championships as part of its efforts to project a modern, European image with luxury shops and a thriving culture. Many of the teenagers inject drugs or sell sex, and face serious health risks including syphilis, hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS. In some cities, close to 20 per cent of youngsters living on the streets who were tested were HIV positive. Theroux and Oram journey underground through pitch-black basements and passageways under the streets of Kiev. Their guides are a group young people who have made their home at the end of a warren of dark corridors. Outside, the temperature is below minus 20 degrees. When she walked into the kitchen, she saw Pattie with her head down, sobbing. Selena cleared her throat, stepping closer. Pattie jumped a bit, startled to find Selena. She got up, wiping away her tears quickly before walking closer to Selena, "Oh you're up. Want anything to eat?" She asked, walking towards the refrigerator. She was the girl that didn't like to play around subjects so she jumped right to it, "Why were you crying Pattie?" She asked, curiously placing herself down on the chair, looking up at the fragile woman. The woman looked down, holding apple juice in her hand, she looked at Selena, "You don't want to hear it sweetheart..trust me, I don't like babbling about problems to you, i mean you just got here," "I'll tell you my story, if you tell me yours," Selena offered, smiling slightly. Pattie sat down across from Selena, now smiling, "Are you positive?" Selena nodded, giving her, her full attention. ---------------------------- "My husband, Justin's father died in a terrible car accident 4 years ago.
